Where to stay in Hoi An, Vietnam with kids

Where to stay in Hoi An, Vietnam with kids

We love Hoi An and we know where to stay in Hoi An with kids. We lived there for six months and Emmie went to school there – we just love it. Hoi An has a range of accommodation from luxury beach and riverfront resorts to affordable homestays and guesthouses. It is a fabulous place to stop and reset for at least three or four days and explore the countryside, the paddies and the ancient town. And the food in Hoi An is amazing!

BEst hotelsin Hoi An for families

The ancient town straddles the The Bon River. The architecture and coloured walls make Hoi An a beautiful place in daytime or at night when the lanterns are lighting up the town. And the food is incredible – fresh and tasty and delicious, on the street or in Hoi An’s incredible restaurants.

Hoi An is about 30 minutes from Da Nang railway station and airport making it a perfect base for other trips around Vietnam, like a weekend in Hanoi or a trip to Saigon – from here you can even make your way overland into Cambodia.

In my opinion there are four key areas to choose from in Hoi An – around the Ancient Town (our fave), Cam Chau – mid way between the old town and the beach – the resort areas around Cua Dai Beach and An Bang Beach.

Here are our faves – most we have stayed at so you know you’re getting an honest recommendation. If you stay please let us know your feedback so we can continue to give hotel advice for Hoi An!

Let’s go!

Hoi An Ancient Town

This area has some of the best accom in Hoi An for families, couples, solos – everyone! I love staying in this part of Hoi An as the Ancient Town has all the vibes, the beautiful architecture, fabulous restaurants, vibrant personality and people. It also has fabulous STREET FOOD! Glab your cheap and tasty banh mi and chicken rice off the street and enjoy. We have always found it very safe and friendly. It’s just so beautiful and makes me happy!

Luxe: The Anantara Hoi An Resort

where to stay at Hoi An with kids

The gorgeous Anantara Resort Hoi An – perfect for families

We love this resort. It is simply beautiful and is right on the river and few minutes into the ancient town.

Of course, it is the Anantara so the rooms are absolutely gorgeous, breakfast is amazing and the pool is lovely and shaded by beautiful leafy trees. When you are a guest here you are treated like royalty! It’s perfect luxury. You can do cooking classes, make lanterns and perfectly combine rest and culture. You can read all about our stay here.

Affordable: Thanh Van I

HOI AN WITH KIDS

Location, price and friendliness are all perfect at Thanh Van 1

This hotel is fabulous value for money, is only five minutes from the ancient town and has a shaded swimming pool in the middle of the lobby.  We just stayed here on our last trip to Hoi An (May 2018) and we just loved it.

Breakfast is plentiful with plates of tropical fruit including mango, watermelon and lychees. They have a tailor next door and we had fab dresses made at competitive prices (minus 10% for guests!)

The rooms are large with good showers and aircon, and the staff are just the most lovely people we’ve had the pleasure to stay with. We adored this hotel and there is an awesome banh mi just downstairs in the evening and a lady that makes the best chicken rice just up the road on Hai Ba Trung too.

Check out prices here – this is one of our faves and excellent value.

Mid range: Ha An Hotel

This is such a pretty hotel with huge rooms, lovely gardens and seating areas and an excellent pool. the architecture is very old town in style so it feels like you’r din the town and not a hotel as you’re eating and spending time by the pool.

Location is excellent and the hotel offers free bikes for guests. Check it out here.

Affordable: Hoi An Travelodge Hotel

Best hotels in Hoi An with kids

This hotel is excellent value and is in such a fabulous location right near the old town, with large rooms, free bikes and a covered swimming pool in the centre of the lobby. You can see prices and more of the hotel here.

Cam Chau – midway between the Ancient Town & the beach

We really enjoyed staying in this areas as it is a more local and less touristy part of Hoi An where you can grab 80c pho at one of the homes that opens in the morning to serve breakfast to workers and their families, wander the streets and grab street food.

Affordable – Botanic Garden Villas (we lived here!)

Hotels for kids in Hoi AN

We actually lived here for months and we adore these villas. The rooms are large and there are family rooms here with separate bedrooms and kitchenette. The villas have two pools, a play area, a really good breakfast and they offer complimentary bikes which are the best way to explore Hoi An and its surrounds. You can get bikes with a padded seat at the back for kids – I left my helmet here so I know they have at least one for guests, but I do suggest if you’re using bikes to make sure at least the children are wearing helmets. You can get them for about $20 at shops along Cua Dai Road.

Check prices and book here – we love Botanic Gardens!

Budget – The Hoi An Backpackers Hostel

Best places in Hoi An to stay for families

The Vietnam Backpackers Hostel is just down the road on Cua Dai which is the road that connects the Ancient Town to the beach. This is a modern hostel with clean and bright common areas, an outdoor pool. Private rooms have TV and aircon although unfortunately there are not family rooms here it’s a good option if you can grab a four bed dorm or a private room if you’re a couple or traveling with a young child.

Check out the hostel and prices here. One of the restaurants I love, Coco, is on the river right nearby. It makes an excellent pomello salad.

Affordable: Bamboo Homestay

hoi an with kids

This homestay is super cute and surrounded by gardens and flowers. It has big rooms, modern bathrooms, reliable aircon and fabulous local hosts who are helpful and kind.

We love the location and it gets great reviews for its rooms, pool and free bikes. Read reviews and check out prices here.

Beach resorts

If you want to stay near the beach then you can stay in resorts or homestays – it just depends what you’re after, or you could do both! We love these awesome resorts – and while you’re there, make sure to eat at the best restaurants in Hoi An.

Sunrise Premium Resort Hoi An

We love Sunrise! We spent a lot of our time here when we lived in Hoi An, back in the day when you could get a pass in. Now it’s a little more exclusive and for in-house guests only, which is a good thing!  Its swimming pools are fabulous, they have an awesome kids club AND they put ice cubes into the pool at 1pm each day! They also bring around a chilled water spray gun twice a day to cool guests down.

The food is divine – try the pomello salad – and they have a kids menu…the portion sizes are huge. We love this resort.

Check out prices and more pics here – we love Sunrise!

The Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort & Spa

We stayed here with friends and it is a gorgeous resort with a beautiful pool, huge rooms with large balconies and gorgeous views out to sea. Breakfasts are generous and they offer specialist tours –  we took a motorbike and sidecar tour through the countryside, stopping at the pottery making village and organic farm. Lots of fun!

Note that it is not possible to swim here but the pool and grounds more than make up for it, and you can have an awesome day on the beach at An Bang just down the road.

Check out photos and prices here.

Palm Garden Beach Resort & Spa

Palm Garden is lovely resort with bungalows scattered around the green leafy grounds, a gorgeous beach and huge pool. The beach has lifeguards and the water is nice enough for a snorkel. It’s definitely an affordable resort option for the family.

We stayed here just after we had moved to Hoi An. Emmie was in school and I was missing her so we came to Palm Garden for a weekend of fun together.

Such good memories…the only thing is that the pool water does tend to get warmed up buy the end of the day.

Check out rates and other reviews here.

Luxe: Four Seasons The Nam Hai

This resort is absolutely divine – it’s one of the best resorts in Hoi An for families and it’s easy to see why. We felt like royalty when we stayedhere – the room was just out of this world and the beach is picture perfect. But it’s the service and attention to guests that sets it apart. It’s the kind of resort you never want to leave and even if you don’t leave the resort brings Hoi An to you with lantern festivals, street food evenings and traditional ceremonies.

On arrival you’ll find personalised bikes at your bungalow – if you have a toddler a bike with training wheels will be waiting or if your child is smaller you’ll have a little cart behind your bike for them to sit in. It’s so amazing.

The breakfast here is one of the best I’ve ever had and the staff and attention to detail is incredible. There are three pools – family and adults only – a tennis court and gorgeous spa…I had a fabulous massage here overlooking the pond. The private beach is also stunning with sparking white sand stretching for miles.

Emmie did a special cooking kids cooking class and lantern making and the Kids Club is so well equipped that you’ll have no touble dropping your kids off while you relax with a book and a cocktail!

It’s at the higher end of seriously beautiful  but wow – amazing.

Check out the prices here…it’s worth it!

An Bang

An Bang Beach is a gorgeous, stretch of water and is not too developed yet – there are a lot of homestays and guesthouses run by local families as well as some new fancier villas. Along here you’ll find some fab beach bars like Salt and Kahuna (if you’re Aussie you’ll love the Sunday Bunnings sausage sizzle!). There are also lots of little local restaurants, stores and massage places, locals chatting and kids playing in the street. It’s really nice. You can get taxis from the main An Bang Beach drop point in the middle of the two ends of An Bang Beach.

Budget – Under the Coconut Tree An Bang Homestay

This lovely guesthouse is just a sandy path away from the beach and has it’s own sunbeds, umbrellas and drinks service  on the beach. You can sleep in dorms or private rooms and it has a family room which is perfect. Just note that the private rooms have quite thin walls so if you’re unfortunate enough to have a drunk snoring man in the room next to you, like we did, you will need ear plugs.

The meals here are super delicious and many local families live close by. You can eat at local  restaurants in the street, there is a really great spa on the corner  and you’re close to beach bars like Salt and Kahunas which are super fun to spend time at during the day (Kahunas has a pool too).

Check out prices here.

Affordable: Sea Weed Homestay

This awesome little guesthouse also has a family room and is only moments from the beach – with it’s own section of private beach with cabanas and beachchairs.

Rooms are big, food is fabulous and they also offer free bikes for guests.

Check out prices here

Affordble: An Bang Beach Dolphin Homestay

If a pool is important to you then take a look at this lovely homestay right near the beach.

It’s a lovely spot, with TV in the room, aircon and toiletries. They also provide free bikes which I love!

You can take a look at reviews and rates here.

Sea Snails homestay

Sea Snail Homestay is another lovely An Bang homestay with super beautiful rooms and sitting areas – the rooms and styling is just gorgeous.  They also offer free bikes and have a family room on the second floor! We love An Bang  – there is a 3am rooster though so beware!

Check out pics and prices here.

Have a great time in Hoi An – I have no doubt you will love it as much as we do xoxo

We basically lived at the Botanic Gardens and it is very small, quiet and clean. The larger family room is right next to the pool which is perfect for being able to just step outside and swim or sit in the garden near the pool while the kids sleep. They have a number of properties next door to each other so do ask when you enquire. The standard of accommodation in Hoi An is very good xx

We are looking to go to Hoi An. We are family of 4 2 adults and 1 toddler (2.5 years) and a infant (4 months). Can you advice if any of the homestays are accommodating for a young family? I am conscious that i will have a baby so I would like the facilities to be quiet and clean.

Hi Ania - thanks so much for this guide! Very timely as we consider meeting our UK family in Vietnam for 10 days (we're in Oz). Heard awesome things about Hoi An, but wondering if you'd recommend Danang at all? Heard mixed reviews. Just trying to figure out a good Vietnam itinerary for 10 days with 2 kids (8 and 10), and a Grandfather (a little adventurous, but not TOO adventurous). Would love any recommendations you have!

hi, how are you? I enjoyed reading about Hoi An and was remembering my visit there. I wonder where we will go next and since you mentioned that your daughter was attending school there i wonder which school and was it expensive. I wouldn't mind to go back again to Hoi An and if I could put girls to school in there it would be an extra bonus. Thank you and all the best

Hi Ania! I'm not sure if I replied here but we went to Greenshoots international, and there is another school now called Hoi An International. THey;re not cheap but they're not as expensive as some international schools...plus the cost of living is so low there in Vietnam it balances out! All teh best, Evie x

Hi Ania, It is expensive really as it's international school but i found the cheap cost of living balanced it out for us. There are two schools now, Green Shoots where Emmie went and a new school, I think it is called Hoi An International School and it looks amazing - it's just opened so I think they are offering a discount on fees. Green Shoots is fab though, you can check fees on the website xo
